White Patterns
Roan
This term is used with an animal has an intermingling of one color and white. Horse must have a darker head than the rest of its body. i.e. Strawberry or Blue Roan

Tobiano
  • Minimum spots to have color: Solid head (described below) with at least one of the following: lower tail, flank, and chest front.
  • Solid head with or without a normal white face marking.
  • All four legs usually white from hock/knees/"wrist" down - can have white higher as well. Up to one solid leg allowed.
  • Back is not a single color, white and color would cross.
  • Spots are regular and distinct as ovals or round patterns.
  • Tail may be one color, but is often two colors - usually white and either the body color or black (depending on the horse).
  • May have blue eyes.
  • Preferred Tobiano is to be equally distributed in amount of color and white throughout the horse- both equally acceptable is predominately colored or predominately white.

Overo
Frame Overo
  • White begins from the middle of the neck on each side and the belly side, those markings are "framed" in with a colored chest front and around the neck.
  • White markings will not cross the back between the withers (between the end of the neck and the start of the back) and the tail.
  • Solid head with a large blaze or bald face.
  • At least three dark legs, preferably all; allowed to have white leg markings like a solid/self horse.
  • The tail should be colored
  • One or two blue eyes usually, but both can be brown.
  • White color on body is irregular (scattered or splashy).
  • Preferred Overo to be predominately colored or predominately white.

Sabino (Calico Overo)
  • Four white legs usually (some may have darker legs) that extend up to the belly.
  • Usually has a lot of white on the head; minimum color: ears.
  • Body markings irregular and splashy, usually starting on the belly and can then extend up the neck and back towards the rump.
  • Blue and/or brown eyes.
  • White markings usually ragged.

Splashed White
  • Minimal white: snip that is often crooked and at least two white lower legs.
  • Minimal color: ears, back, and neck and chest fronts.
  • Usually have a lot of white on the head.
  • Muzzle preferably untextured pink (180 or 202) if a lot of white on the head.
  • Blue eyes or brown eyes; at least one blue eye is preferred if all else is equal.
  • White gives the appearance of moving from the lower legs and up.
  • Markings very definite, not ragged like in Sabino.

Tovero/Tobero
  • A single equine would have at least two features seen on an Overo and at least two features seen on a Tobiano.
  • One or both eyes are blue.
  • Preferred Tovero/Tobero should be predominately colored or predominately white.
